On Friday afternoon, Bloomingdale Elementary School hosted a Veterans Day program that brought together students, staff, parents, community members, and local veterans in a moving tribute to those who have served our country. The event, organized by BE teachers Kara Caldwell and Julie Morehead, marked the return of this annual tradition, and it was a memorable day for all in attendance.
Principal Bill Dygert welcomed guests, expressing his pride in the students for their commitment to honoring veterans. He later shared, "We are immensely proud of our students for the work they put into this program. It is vital for us as educators to foster activities like this, which teach our students the importance of honoring those who have served and continue to serve our country.”
The program began with Superintendent Mr. Reo leading attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. Second and third graders then performed two patriotic songs, "A-M-E-R-I-C-A" and "In the Heart of America," each prepared with their classroom teachers.
A highlight of the program was the participation of Bloomingdale's Student Council members, who greeted guests and delivered heartfelt speeches. Student Council President Brooklyn Pantelleria gave a speech on the history of Veterans Day, while Vice President Raelynn Kelly recited "Veterans Day" by Cheryl Dyson. Secretary Nila Castro expressed gratitude to veterans near and far, and Treasurer Addylyn Daniels concluded with a poignant poem to remind us of the importance of remembering those who served.
Mrs. Goudzwaard prepared a slideshow showcasing local veterans and their connections to Bloomingdale Elementary students and staff, which was followed by a small token of appreciation given to each veteran in attendance.
A special moment in the ceremony was when band director Mr. Arking and the high school band performed "The Star-Spangled Banner." The program concluded with second and third graders joining in song once more with "You're a Grand Old Flag."
Reflecting on the event, Ms. Caldwell and Ms. Morehead said, "It is our honor and privilege to coordinate this program each year. The students' dedication and the community's participation make it truly special."
This Veterans Day program served as a heartfelt reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans and reinforced the importance of instilling respect and gratitude in Bloomingdale’s youngest learners.
